Marine Incident - Cox Peninsula

Northern Territory Police have been searching an area near the Cox Peninsula after a number of items were found in the water earlier today.

A fisherman called police at around 1:30pm after he found an esky, a box with life jackets and flares, hats, thongs and a boat chair about 1.5 nautical miles (almost 3km) offshore from Charles Point Lighthouse, Northern Territory Police say

A pouch of tobacco with Greek writing was also discovered.

"We’ve been searching the area with a boat and a helicopter since the discovery was made this afternoon but haven’t found who the items might belong to," Water Police Sergeant John Pini said.

"Based on the objects that have been found, we’re concerned a vessel might have capsized in the area.

"If that’s not the case, we’d love for anyone who recognises the items to get in touch with us so we can call off the search," he said.

NT Police are asking anyone who may have come to the assistance of a vessel or person in the area, or who has any knowledge of the events to contact them.

If you have any information please call police on 131 444.
