Marine search and rescue in Karumba, QLD

Police and emergency services have commenced a search for the male occupant of a vessel in the Gulf of Carpentaria early this morning (August 26), Queensland Police say.

At about 1.40am, the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre advised of an emergency beacon activation.

A rescue aircraft located the vessel approximately 35 nautical miles north west of Karumba with no one on board.

Search vessels from VMR Karumba and Burketown are currently en-route to conduct a search of the area.

Additional resources involved in the search include fixed wing aircraft Rescue 330 and helicopter Rescue 510 from Cairns and a number of private fixed wing aircraft.

Police are appealing to boat users in the area to be on the lookout for the missing man.
