Nillumbik residents have yet another high-quality sporting facility to enjoy with the official opening of the Marngrook Oval Pavilion in Diamond Creek.
Nillumbik Mayor Peter Perkins, Yan Yean MP Danielle Green, Eltham MP Vicki Ward, along with the various user groups today attended an event to mark its official opening.
Danielle Green was representing the Minister for Local Government and Suburban Development, Shaun Leane.
The new pavilion and lighting upgrade, a project worth almost $1.6 million, was funded through a Victorian Government Growing Suburbs Fund (GSF) allocation and Nillumbik Shire Council.
The GSF allocation was over $400,000 with Council contributing more than $1.1 million.
The works include:
- Four new female-friendly change rooms;
- Referees' rooms and change rooms;
- A first aid room;
- Leading edge sustainability and accessibility features, including ramping for easier access to the sportsground;
- Four new 25m-high lighting poles; and
- The installation of new LED floodlights.
Nillumbik Mayor Peter Perkins said the new pavilion was a timely addition to the growing list of high-quality sporting and recreational facilities in the area and throughout the Shire.
"The new pavilion and upgraded lighting will make a real and positive difference to the clubs, players and all users," he said.
"The pandemic meant the new facility could not be used last year but seeing it now and the energy and enthusiasm around Marngrook Oval since it has been available for use, it's clear that it has been well worth the wait.
"From having to use change rooms and toilets at surrounding facilities, the user groups now have their own and I'm very pleased that this situation has been rectified.
"As a Council, we make it a priority to support and encourage increased female participation in sport throughout our Shire and a key element to achieving this is through the provision of quality facilities and welcoming environments.
"In achieving this we owe a debt of gratitude to the Victorian Government for its generous and ongoing funding support and, of course, to the tireless advocacy of Danielle Green and Vicki Ward on our and the community's behalf."
