Community launch celebrates Wiradyuri language, culture and connection to Country.

Leeton Museum and Art Gallery (LMAG) invites the community to the official opening of Marrum: Marrambidya Galing on Saturday, 17 October.

Curated by Wiradjuri artists and storytellers, the exhibition recognises language as cultural knowledge, identity and continuity while celebrating Wiradjuri voices and the strength of story passed on through generations.

The title reflects the region's deep Wiradjuri heritage. Marrambidya, also known as Marrambidya Bila, is the traditional Wiradjuri name for the Murrumbidgee River and translates approximately as "big water" or "plenty big water", while galing means water or rain.

For Wiradjuri people, the Murrumbidgee River is a lifeline, a mother and the spiritual blood of people and Country. Through local Indigenous storytelling and art, the exhibition honours this sacred connection to the waterways.

Leeton Shire Council Deputy Mayor, Councillor Michael Kidd, said the exhibition was a proud moment for LMAG and the wider community.

"This is a proud moment for LMAG and Leeton Shire Council. We are celebrating an exhibition grounded in Wiradyuri language, story and connection to Country, while also opening infrastructure that will make the building more accessible for our whole community," Cr Kidd said.[KB1]

Exhibition co-creator Elijah Ingram is a proud Wiradjuri man and digital artist, Creative Officer at Western Riverina Arts, and co-founder and Creative Director of Miil Miil Productions, which uses film to help preserve and revitalise Aboriginal languages.

"The exhibition is our chance to tell the story of Wiradjuri water usage and the connection the community has to the waterways. We focused on making sure our water was front and centre and reflected the role it plays in maintaining culture and language," Mr Ingram said.

The community is invited to come along, celebrate and experience this important exhibition at Leeton Museum and Art Gallery. Everyone is welcome. Morning tea will be provided.

Marrum: Marrambidya Galing is proudly funded by the NSW Government with support from Leeton Shire Council.
