Martin Street to Transform With Multicultural Murals

Bayside City Council, with support from Business Victoria's Multicultural Business Precinct Revitalisation Program, is bringing a vibrant new public art project to Martin Street, Brighton. Two large-scale murals will transform the Gardenvale Station bridge, creating a striking visual gateway to the precinct.

The project celebrates Martin Street's rich multicultural heritage, reflecting both its historic roots and the diverse community that shapes it today. From the area's early Chinese market gardens to the Italian, Vietnamese, French, Greek and Japanese influences seen across the precinct, the murals will capture the many stories that define this unique and thriving community.

At its heart, the project is community-led. Local business owners and stakeholders will play a key role in co-designing the artworks, ensuring the final outcome authentically reflects local culture, identity and lived experience.

Conceived as a visual conversation across time, one mural will honour the past while the other captures the energy and diversity of the present. Together, they will form a cohesive narrative of place, connection and belonging.

Once complete, the murals will establish a vibrant new gateway for Martin Street, fostering pride and creating a stronger sense of identity for residents, visitors and traders alike.

Council looks forward to working closely with artists and the community to bring this exciting vision to life, with the completed murals set to be unveiled and celebrated in early 2027.

Council is currently seeking expressions of interest from experienced artists and artist teams to deliver this project.
