The rally comes after an announcement by Israel's Agriculture Minister that he has informed his Australian counterpart that Israel intends to significantly reduce the number of live animals imported from Australia and increase the importation of boxed meat (translation of announcement below).
29,343 cattle and 69,076 sheep were exported to Israel for slaughter in 2017.
The voyage is an 18 day journey from Fremantle. The Gulf of Aden is as dangerous as the Persian Gulf during summer months in terms increased risk for sheep suffering and dying from heat stress and heat stroke. The over-crowding of sheep on voyages to Israel is the same as what was revealed on 60 Minutes.
The trade to Israel is controversial, with mounting calls within the country for it to end, including within the Knesset. 6 members of the Knesset, including government MK's, attended the rally overnight.
A video of the rally can be seen on the FB page of local group, Israel Against Live Shipments.
With local colleague groups, Animals Australia this weekend launched its second major public campaign in Israel calling for an end to live animal imports. The bus and bus shelter ads will run throughout Tel Aviv and Jerusalem (mock-up of one ad attached).
