Mater's Redland Expansion Boosts Local Healthcare

Mater Private Hospital Redland is set to treat an extra 5000 patients a year thanks a major expansion of its surgical and procedural suites.

The project features a new endoscopy suite, including of two new operating theatres, and a dedicated eye procedure theatre equipped with Australia's first See Luma digital ophthalmology microscope.

Mater Private Hospital Redland General Manager Chris Junge said the expansion means Redland patients can now access faster treatment, closer to home.

Twelve new specialist doctors have joined the hospital's team of consultants as a result of the increase in capacity.

"This expansion is a huge win for healthcare in the Redlands," Mr Junge said

"It means we will be welcoming an additional 5,000 patients through the doors of Mater Private Hospital Redland each year.

"Mater is growing as our community grows and we are meeting the present and future health needs of the Bayside population.

"For instance, Mater can now conduct more bowel cancer checks locally, treat more cataract cases locally and perform more hip and knee replacements locally.

"We are also creating opportunities to deliver new services, such as low-risk neurosurgery.

"Crucially, our investment means that it will be much easier for local residents to see a specialist in the Redlands and have their procedure performed without having to travel into the city.

"We're delivering exceptional, convenient healthcare for the Redlands community."

The expansion was part-funded by Mater Foundation. The new theatres and suites were this week officially opened and blessed by Father Ignas Sibar, Mater's Catholic Chaplain.

Mater Group Chief Executive Julia Strickland-Bellamy said the expansion was a significant milestone for Mater's hospital network.

"Mater's first Queensland hospital was founded by the Sisters of Mercy, more than a century ago, to address the unmet healthcare needs of our communities – and this is exactly what we're continuing to do here in Redland," Ms Strickland-Bellamy said.

"Our investment in high-quality infrastructure and world-leading technology is ensuring that Mater will continue to meet the growing health needs of the Redlands community."
