Mayor Pontin Pays Tribute To Firefighter

MidCoast Council

MidCoast Council Mayor, Claire Pontin took the time during Wednesday's Ordinary Council meeting to honour the sacrifice of the NSW National Parks & Wildlife Services firefighter who lost his life protecting the townships of Bulahdelah and Nerong recently.

During her Mayoral Minute Cr Pontin went on to thank the rest of the staff and volunteers who worked tirelessly battling the fires throughout the region.

"I want to start by acknowledging the tragic death of the NSW National Parks & Wildlife Services firefighter who lost his life on Sunday while working on the backburning operation for the Bulahdelah fires," she said.

"The man was a veteran field officer and experienced firefighter who began his career with the NSW National Parks & Wildlife Services in 1996.

"I spoke with the National Parks & Wildlife Services Area Manager on Monday morning to pass on our condolences to her team who administered first aid and to the family of the firefighter. I am following this up with a formal letter to the firefighter's family on behalf of Council.

"I also want to acknowledge the tireless efforts of our Rural Fire Services volunteers and the staff and volunteers from the NSW National Parks & Wildlife Services and State Forests who have been working tirelessly on the many fires in the MidCoast area.

"The worst bushfire in our region has impacted residents in Bulahdelah, Crawford River, Nerong and The Branch and burned through 4644 hectares since it started on Thursday. During this event one person has lost their house and four other property owners have lost farm structures and sheds. Council staff and welfare agencies are providing assistance to these people.

"I understand that some of the fires closer to our towns and villages are thought to have been purposefully lit. This is despicable and I urge everyone to keep a watch out for and report any suspicious behaviour.

"As we approach a potentially dry Christmas and summer period, it is important that we all remain alert to the risks of bushfire. Pay attention to any warnings from the emergency services, be prepared, have your family's fire safety plan at hand and keep safe."
