Australians with private art collections are being asked to consider displaying their pieces at the new HOTA Gallery when it opens in late 2020.
"We do things differently here on the Gold Coast. This is a unique way where the generosity of Australians can come to the fore,'' said Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate.
"I know there are many private collectors who will be willing to consider placing their art on loan to the gallery, so all Australians can enjoy the works.''
Mayor Tate said the gallery curator could work with individuals or family trusts, to ensure the appropriate handling, security and insurance was in place.
"I can see sections of the gallery set aside based on individual artists, whether it is work from Sidney Nolan, Brett Whiteley or Albert Namatjira.
"Who knows what incredible art work exists out there until we ask the question?'' he said.
Gallery facts:
• Work has started on the construction of our purpose-built $60.5 million HOTA Gallery.
• When completed in late 2020, it will be the largest public gallery outside a capital city in Australia.
• The Gallery is a vertical format gallery over six levels. It will have 2000m2 of AAA rated exhibition space.
• The Main Exhibition Gallery is a 1000m2 space. It will be fitted out specifically for touring exhibitions.
• The Children's Gallery will have around 170m2.
• Apart from the touring space and children's space, the Gallery will be home to 900m2 of permanent collection space spread over three levels.
• Behind the scenes, there is nearly 1000m2 of collection storage, work space and crate storage area.
• The cultural beacon of the gallery is the rooftop experience - a public area and bar 30m above the ground with 270 degree views of the natural landscape and skyline of the city.
