Mayor to push for Federal funding to rebuild Townsville

Townsville's long-term economic recovery plan will be presented to the Federal Government this week, with Mayor Jenny Hill travelling to Canberra to lobby for funding.

Cr Hill will ask the Federal Government to back four key programs that will make the city's economy more resilient and sustainable.

Cr Hill is seeking investment for business recovery, defence growth, a smart precinct and a tourism package.

"Townsville has suffered a massive blow and all levels of government need to act decisively and quickly," Cr Hill said.

"The Prime Minister made time to come and visit Townsville so he's seen how it has devastated families, streets and the community."

The flood recovery will create jobs and inject money into the economy but Cr Hill is trying to drive long-term employment.

"The City Investment and Business Recovery Package would look at redeveloping sites and encourage new businesses to invest in Townsville, Cr Hill said.

"The Defence Industry and Naval Capacity program will develop a synthetic training environment that incorporates defence contractors, simulations and be a centre of excellence for combat readiness.

"Our Smart Precinct NQ program will attract new jobs and support local start-ups, innovators and entrepreneurs and develop a skilled workforce for our future.

"The Townsville Tourism Package will build on our natural advantage with projects that could include the Castle Hill zip-line and feature lighting and push for support for the proposed Concert Hall and events/ arts multipurpose space."

Cr Hill is urging the Prime Minister to contribute substantial funds for creating long-term jobs and rebuilding the largest city in north Australia.
