Mayor welcomes sister city's support

Townsville City Council has thanked its Japanese Sister City Iwaki for its generous donations after the unprecedented monsoon.

Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said Iwaki City has donated 850,000 Japanese Yen and Iwaki City Council Member Club has donated 300,000 Japanese Yen.

"That translates to around $15,000 to help Townsville recover from the monsoon," Cr Hill said.

"We have a very strong relationship with Iwaki and we really appreciate their support.

"Council is donating the money to GIVIT, the not for profit organisation that has done so much to help the community since the floodwater receded."

Cr Hill said she has also received a letter of support from Iwaki City Mayor Toshio Shimizu.

"Iwaki has been our Sister City since 1991 and it's great to know we have their support – this money will help families that are still trying to recover," Cr Hill said.

"I told Mr Shimizu about the situation we faced early this year but I told him how resilient we are.

"I told him we'd work together throughout the recovery process and this money will help us repair some of the damage from the monsoon.

"We have developed a great relationship with Iwaki and I want to thank them for helping our community."
