The Allan Labor Government is delivering better facilities and an improved patient experience at the Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne - with a major upgrade now complete.
Minister for Health Mary-Anne Thomas today officially unveiled the $7 million redevelopment, which has transformed the hospital's ground floor level into a modern, welcoming space designed to support high-quality care for Victorians.
The upgrade includes new offices for Aboriginal liaison and social workers, consultation rooms, a spacious entrance and waiting area able to accommodate the nearly 500 patients who visit the hospital each day.
The project will also deliver improvements to patient flow, with new patient liaison areas, quiet spaces for patients and families, and a dedicated prayer room - ensuring a more comfortable and culturally safe environment for all Victorians.
Located in Carlton, the Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne has provided public dental care since 2003, delivering general, emergency and specialist services through 140 dental chairs and four operating theatres, while training the next generation of oral health professionals in partnership with leading universities and training institutes.
Established in 1890 as a volunteer-run service, it has grown into Victoria's leading public dental and teaching facility - playing a vital role in improving oral health and developing the state's dental workforce.
The project was delivered in partnership with Oral Health Victoria and the Victorian Health Building Authority, reinforcing the Allan Labor Government's commitment to modernising Victoria's health infrastructure and supporting better patient outcomes.
The Victorian Budget 2025/26 is investing more than $31 billion to strengthen the health system, including $218 in a range of dental health services, including the Royal Dental Hospital which will deliver critical public dental care to more than 332,000 Victorians.
As stated by Minister for Health Mary-Anne Thomas
"The Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne plays a vital role in delivering public dental care and supporting Victoria's dental workforce - this major upgrade ensures it can continue doing that in a modern, welcoming environment."
"This is another example of the Allan Labor Government's investment in health infrastructure that delivers real benefits for patients, staff and the community."
