Men assaulted while fishing in Newcastle

Two men have been charged after an assault in Newcastle, NSW Police say.

About 12.40am yesterday, (Monday 5 February 2018), police were called to the ferry terminal at Queens Wharf on Wharf Road in Newcastle, after reports two men who were accompanied by a juvenile, approached two men fishing.

The first man, aged 22, threatened the men with a glass bottle after he was refused a cigarette.

The second man, also aged 22, picked up a pair of scissors and demanded one of the men give him his necklace and watch.

One of the men then handed over a cigarette, while still being threatened.

The second man managed to slip away and contacted police.

The two 22-year-old men realised police had been contacted and left the scene, walking along the front of the Queens Wharf.

Police from Newcastle City Local Area Command arrived a short time later and arrested both men. A crime scene was established and they are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

No injuries were reported.

Both men who are from Mayfield were charged with assault with intent to rob and were refused bail to appear in Newcastle Local Court today (Tuesday 6 February 2018).

The juvenile female was released pending further inquiries.
