Detective from the Major and Organised Crime Squad Brisbane have travelled to New South Wales to extradite two men to Queensland in relation to a protracted investigation into alleged sports match fixing on the Gold Coast.
On 12 August, officers from the New South Wales Police State Crime Command's Organised Crime Squad's Gaming Unit (OG-GU) executed search warrants at properties in Mosman and Mount Colah, as part of ongoing investigations into alleged match-fixing attempts in relation to Gold Coast based football games.
It will be alleged on 12 May and 20 June, two employees of an offshore investment group acting as 'player agents' approached another player at a Coomera address, in a coordinated effort to procure match-fixing behaviour, in exchange for payment.
Following information received as part of extensive investigations under Operation Xray Elude, detectives travelled to Sydney earlier this week to seek the extradition both men alleged to have been involved in the incidents.
Detective Chief Inspector Melissa Anderson from the Drug and Serious Crime Group said the arrests were the result of a determined investigation and thorough police work which uncovered evidence.
"Match-fixers attempt to manipulate games to gain a benefit, usually gambling profit, or the overall value of clubs, teams and players. These charges should serve as a clear warning to anyone considering taking part in match-fixing," Detective Chief Inspector Anderson said.
"Match-fixing is serious criminal behaviour that undermines community confidence in the fairness of sport.
"This is only the second time a person has been charged with this offence since the introduction of match-fixing legislation in 2014.
"We are committed to working with partner agencies including the New South Wales Police and Sport Integrity Australia to ensure a safe and fair sporting environment in Queensland."
The men aged 55 and 45 have been extradited to Queensland and charged with one count each each of procure person to engage in match-fixing pecuniary benefit.
They are due to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on 14 August.
Queensland Police would like to thank Sport Integrity Australia and the NSW Police Force and their Organised Crime Gaming Unit for their assistance.
