The Australian Border Force (ABF) has issued fines totalling $29,800 and cancelled the visas of two Indian men, after they falsely declared alcohol products intercepted in Sydney.
The infringement penalty notices were issued after ABF officers detected a sea cargo container containing undeclared whisky products concealed within beer boxes.
On 8 July 2025, ABF investigators executed warrants under the Customs Act 1901 to seize the cargo and gather evidence, after the men contacted the underbond facility manager to request they remove the undeclared whisky and substitute it with beer product.
Further warrants were executed on 20 August 2025, and evidence was referred to India Post who cancelled one student visa and one tourist visa on 7 October 2025. The men are no longer in the country.
ABF Superintendent Mel Stewart said the fines reinforce the message to would-be illicit alcohol importers that there are significant penalties for making a misdeclaration importing goods.
"Seeking to smuggle illicit alcohol undermines the legitimate trade of Australian businesses and the integrity of systems put in place to support honest taxpayers contributing to the community," Superintendent Stewart said.
"ABF officers are working hard every day using sophisticated targeting techniques and intelligence-led screening to catch these offenders and ensure they face the consequences of their actions."
