Bega Valley Shire Council invites the community to the official opening of the Merimbula Skatepark on Friday 31 October at 4pm. The event will be held at Ford Park, Ocean Drive, Merimbula.
Council's Parks, Aquatics and Recreation Manager, John Grady said the project replaces the existing ageing skatepark at Berrambool with a new modern skatepark at Ford Park.
"The new skatepark at Ford Park has been designed to link with existing recreation facilities nearby and adds to the types of skateparks in the shire," Mr Grady said.
"In early stages of the project, the Sapphire Coast Skatepark Association collaborated with skatepark designers, Baseplate on the skatepark design.
"The collaborative design work was key to delivering a skatepark that meets the needs of skaters with different skill levels, so more residents and visitors can enjoy it."
Mayor Russell Fitzpatrick expressed gratitude for the support received from the Sapphire Coast Skatepark Association and the Australian Government to deliver the project.
"Council thanks the Sapphire Coast Skatepark Association for commissioning the design work," Mayor Fitzpatrick said.
"We also thank the Australian Government for its $500,000 in funding to deliver the project.
"Without partnerships like this, we wouldn't see major community projects like this come to fruition.
"Our recreation infrastructure also plays a significant role in attracting new residents to the area and plays an important part in tourism.
"While the skatepark has been open and enjoyed by the community since it's completion in September, I look forward to formally thanking everyone involved at the official opening event."
