Statement
I am saddened to learn of the passing of Gordon Osbaldeston, 14th Clerk of the Privy Council and Secretary to the Cabinet from 1982 to 1985.
Mr. Osbaldeston devoted his life to public service. Mr. Osbaldeston joined the public service in 1953, representing Canada abroad in Ambassadorial assignments before serving as Deputy Minister in a number of key departments. During his tenure as Clerk, he served three Prime Ministers and led the public service through an important period in Canada's history.
As Clerk and Cabinet Secretary, I appreciate and draw from the achievements and dedication of all who have filled this role previously. Mr. Osbaldeston, Companion of the Order of Canada, Member of the Queen's Privy Council for Canada, recipient of an Outstanding Achievement Award from the Public Service of Canada, and honouree of Queen Elizabeth II's Silver, Gold and Diamond Jubilee Medals, raised the bar for all who have followed him. In recognition of Mr. Osbaldeston's distinguished career in public service, the Public Policy Forum initiated an annual lecture series that bears his name.
I extend my heartfelt condolences to Mr. Osbaldeston's family and friends.
