Meth Found in Third Arrest for Sporting Ground Fire

Police have uncovered an alleged large commercial quantity of methylamphetamine while arresting a third man over alleged arson attacks at two sporting facilities in Melbourne's east earlier this year.

Detectives from the Monash Crime Investigation Unit, with assistance from the Special Operations Group, executed a search warrant at a Clarinda address this afternoon and arrested a 43-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman without incident.

Police are currently at the property and are continuing their search for evidence.

A firearm and a large quantity of cash were seized during a second warrant executed at an address in Clayton South this afternoon.

The man and woman will now be interviewed by police.

The arrests come after two community sporting facilities were allegedly set alight, with the first incident occurring at Capital Reserve in Glen Waverley about 3am on 16 April.

Club rooms at a Mayfield Drive building in Mount Waverley were allegedly targeted about 5.15am on 3 May.

Both buildings were destroyed, causing more than $4 million in damage.

Detectives from the Monash Crime Investigation Unit immediately took over the investigation and arrested two men in October.

A 31-year-old Dandenong man was charged with two counts of arson and two counts of theft of motor vehicle.

He faced Melbourne Magistrates' Court on 7 November and was bailed to re-appear on 30 January.

A second man, aged 35 from Clyde North, was charged with firearm possession and trafficking a commercial quantity of methylamphetamine after police located firearms, ammunition, weapons, cash and drugs during a search of the Clyde North address.

He fronted before Melbourne Magistrates' Court on 20 October and was further remanded to appear on 9 January.

Further charges are expected to be laid on the man in relation to the arson.

The arson investigation remains active and ongoing.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
