To mark the 25th anniversary of Mexico's accession as an Observer State to the Council of Europe, the country has presented a work of art to the Organisation. Entitled 'Uroboros de Luz I' it is a tractor tyre adorned with traditional Mexican symbols, notably the 'plumed serpent' god Quetzalcóatl, symbolising peace, renewal, resilience and sustainability.
It was made by the internationally renowned Mexican artist Betsabeé Romero, who describes herself as a "mechanic artist". She works with everyday materials such as used tyres, other car parts and chewing gum. Her creations include sculptures, installations, printmaking, perforated paper, photos and videos. Her design of the pavilion which showcased Mexican culture at Expo 2020 Dubai won first prize.
The gift was unveiled by Council of Europe Deputy Secretary General Bjørn Berge and the Chargée d'Affaires a.i. of Mexico to the Council of Europe, Lydia Antonio de la Garza.
