Following sponsorship of three local operators in 2025, MidCoast Council is again offering the Tourism Industry an opportunity to strengthen their appeal to high yielding, environmentally conscious visitor markets by sponsoring business certification programs with Ecotourism Australia.
Executive Manager Sustainable Development, Rachel Pleasant said the program helps local businesses grow while protecting the region's natural assets.
"With an abundance of attractive natural assets, we also want to ensure the supply and diversity of certified accommodation, tours and experiences across the region meets future market demand." she said.
In the next round of support, Council will reimburse costs of up to $1,430 for small and micro businesses to become certified through a program relevant to their operation. Council is committed to supporting an increase in the number of certified local operators into the future. Eco certification gives visitors confidence that a business meets globally recognised sustainability standards and also helps businesses improve their practices and build long-term resilience.
Two certification programs are available:
ECO Certification for nature-based tourism businesses
Sustainable Tourism Certification for other tourism operators
Businesses will receive guidance and support throughout the certification process from Ecotourism Australia and MidCoast Council.
Expressions of interest are now open and close on 19 April 2026. Successful applicants will be notified by 30 April 2026 and must complete certification within 12 months to be eligible for reimbursement.
Businesses at the early stages of their sustainability journey, who may not yet be ready to pursue formal certification are encouraged to explore the Strive4Sustainability program, which provides a tailored sustainability assessment and improvement plan.
