The Government of Canada is taking action to promote employment opportunities for the middle-class and those working hard to join it.
Today, the Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Transport, announced the Government of Canada's decision to amalgamate the Oshawa and Hamilton port authorities to form the new Hamilton-Oshawa Port Authority. On June 8, 2019, a certificate of amalgamation will be published in the Canada Gazette, Part I, formally announcing the amalgamated entity. The amalgamation of the two port authorities, in effect on June 18, 2019, will maintain regular port operations in Hamilton and in Oshawa.
The newly amalgamated port will be better able to attract investment, develop the supply chain, and enhance the region's global connectivity and competitiveness. Amalgamation will strengthen economic opportunity in the region and will enable a coordinated approach to port development and contribute to broadening multimodal transportation options in the Greater Toronto Area.
This action follows the publication of the Certificate of intent to amalgamate both port authorities on February 9, 2019, after which the Government undertook a 45-day public consultation period, inviting interested parties to provide their comments.
