The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Canadian Identity and Heritage and Minister responsible for Official Languages, made the following statement:
"This evening, at sunset, Jewish communities in Canada and around the world will come together to mark the beginning of Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement and the holiest day of the Hebrew calendar.
A time for reflection, forgiveness and renewal, Yom Kippur marks the culmination of the Ten Days of Repentance that begin with Rosh Hashanah. It is a time to reflect on the past year, acknowledge our mistakes, seek reconciliation and look toward the future. For many, fasting, prayer, acts of kindness and time spent with loved ones give special meaning to these 25 hours of introspection.
Yom Kippur also reminds us of the values that strengthen our communities: compassion, responsibility, humility and care for one another. It is an opportunity to recognize the many remarkable contributions of Jewish Canadians, whose leadership, creativity and service continue to enrich every part of our country.
As Jewish communities gather to observe this sacred day, many continue to face the painful reality of rising antisemitism. Jewish Canadians, like all Canadians, must be free to practise their faith and live their identity without fear. We will continue to stand with Jewish communities and protect these fundamental rights and freedoms, because a Canada where everyone can live safely and freely is a stronger, more resilient and more united Canada.
