Statement
OTTAWA, May 1, 2019
Today, Canadians celebrate the beginning of Canadian Jewish Heritage Month.
On March 29, 2018, Canada's parliament passed an act designating May as Canadian Jewish Heritage Month, in recognition of the contributions of Jewish Canadians to the social, economic, political and cultural fabric of this country.
Canada's Jewish community is roughly 400,000 strong-making it the world's fourth largest Jewish population in the world. Canadian Jewish Heritage Month is an opportunity to recognize the vitality and richness of Jewish culture in Canada and honour our Jewish citizens, who have contributed immensely in building the inclusive society that we enjoy today. As this month begins, I'd like to reaffirm our government's commitment to fighting anti-Semitism, prejudice, and discrimination in all forms.
