Missing swimmer – Cataract Gorge at Launceston

On Tuesday the 25th of January 2022, shortly after one o’clock, police attended the Launceston Cataract Gorge, following the report of a missing swimmer. The woman aged in her 20’s was last seen swimming in the First Basin when she went missing.

Police deployed search and rescue resources to the area including the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, a Police Drone, Police divers, SES volunteers and Surf Lifesaving volunteers, to assist with the search. At the height of the search there were more than 30 people involved.

The female is yet to be located and search efforts will continue throughout the night and into Wednesday.

Police would like to advise that several resources will be tasked to the Cataract Gorge, First Basin throughout the day tomorrow (Wednesday the 26th of January 2022) and ask that members of the public avoid the area while search efforts continue.
