Monash University today welcomed the Final Report of the Expert Council on University Governance (ECUG) and its eight Governance Principles and recognises their role in supporting effective oversight and responsible stewardship across the higher education sector.
Monash is committed to a strong, safe and respectful culture as a foundation of lifting governance and performance. We look forward to working with our Council on aligning Monash's governance framework with the Governance Principles and reporting on our progress.
As a public institution serving the public good, Monash exists to advance knowledge and drive generational social and technological transformation. Strong governance and integrity in decision-making are essential to sustaining public confidence and trust.
Monash Chancellor Dr Megan Clark AC said: "We thank the members of the Expert Council for their comprehensive and considered work. Over the past year, Monash University Council has undertaken a thorough review of its governance policies and practices. This work reflects our commitment to a strong, safe and respectful culture and to continuously assess and improve governance. We will further enhance our policies and practices in alignment with the ECUG Principles."
Dr Clark also welcomed the recommendations to reaffirm the important role of TEQSA. She said: "A world class regulator is a necessary foundation for a world class Australian higher education sector. Monash welcomes the recommendations to strengthen the role of TEQSA and to ensure it has the appropriate resources and capability to uphold shared standards in our sector."
With the new Principles now published, Monash will undertake a gap analysis and determine what further improvements to its governance are needed. The University will report on our progress on alignment with the Principles, including through our website and our 2025 Annual Report to be tabled in the Victorian Parliament in May 2026.
Monash supports these reforms as an opportunity to strengthen shared standards across the sector and reaffirm the University's commitment to accountable, transparent, inclusive, and sustainable governance – principles that we already have in place and will continue to uphold at the highest level – ensuring we deliver on our purpose and vision for the communities we serve.
