Mooloolaba's most anticipated road upgrade set to start

Upgrade works to improve traffic flow along Walan Street between Venning Street and Brisbane Road, Mooloolaba are set to start next month.

Sunshine Coast Council's highly anticipated $7.5 million upgrade of Walan Street to four traffic lanes is part of the multi-stage Mooloolaba Transport Corridor Upgrade (MTCU).

This is stage 1b of the upgrade and is expected to start in early February 2020 and be completed in late 2020, weather and construction conditions permitting.

Stage 1a was completed in October 2019 and involved extending Naroo Court thought to Muraban Street including construction of a new roundabout.

Division 4 Councillor John Connolly said the upgrade would improve connectivity in the heart of Mooloolaba and would improve safety for all road users.

"The Walan Street upgrade will also enhance the southern entrance into Mooloolaba and create a corridor that is integrated and inviting for pedestrians, cyclists, motorists and public transport users," Cr Connolly said.

"Hall Contracting, a locally owned and operated business, was awarded the contract to upgrade Walan Street."

Hall Contracting CEO Cameron Hall said having completed the first stage of the Mooloolaba Transport Corridor Upgrade in October 2019, he looked forward to starting work on stage 1b in February 2020.

"Our team recently extended Naroo Court through to Muraban Street as part of stage 1a, so we're familiar with the traffic conditions in the area and have detailed plans in place for managing live traffic throughout the construction period," Mr Hall said.

"As a Sunshine Coast-based company employing more than 150 local workers, we're thrilled to be playing a role in improving accessibility within our beautiful region."

Cr Connolly said council had been liaising with the residents and businesses along Walan Street and other community members for some time to inform them of the corridor upgrade.

"Council will continue to provide regular construction updates throughout the project," Cr Connolly said.

"Reduced speed limits and changed traffic conditions will be in place during construction and council thanks motorists in advance for their patience during the important upgrade."
