Fawkner Highway Patrol officers intercepted a high range drink driver in Moonee Ponds this evening.
Officers noticed a white Hyundai Tucson without its headlights operating, travelling along Ascot Vale Road about 7pm.
They followed the car to intercept it and observed it cross over to the wrong side of the road and almost collided with an oncoming tram.
They intercepted the car and spoke to the driver, a 44-year-old woman from Seddon.
She underwent a preliminary breath test which returned a positive result.
After accompanying police to a local station, the driver undertook an evidentiary breath test where she returned an alleged reading of 0.279.
She was issued an immediate 12 month driving ban and will be charged with exceeding the prescribed content of alcohol whilst driving.
Her car was also impounded for 30 days at a cost of $966.
