Mordialloc Level Crossing Removal Works Begin

VIC Premier

The Allan Labor Government is kickstarting major construction to get rid of another three dangerous bayside level crossings and build a new premium Mordialloc Station.

Minister for Transport Infrastructure Gabrielle Williams today announced crews will begin a 10 day construction blitz starting tonight - working around the clock to build foundations of the new rail bridges which will replace level crossings at McDonald Street, Mordialloc and Station Street, Aspendale.

The works will involve drilling more than 100 holes up to 31 metres deep and demolishing parts of the existing Mordialloc Station.

Signalling infrastructure and boom gates at Bear Street, Mordialloc will also be dismantled, with the road remaining permanently closed to traffic to maintain access to the nearby stabling facility. The project will transform the area under the rail bridge into a vibrant new station precinct with safer connections to nearby shops and transport.

To safely carry out these works, buses will replace trains on sections of the Frankston Line from 8:30pm Monday, 18 August.

When trains resume on Friday, 29 August, all services will arrive and depart from Platform 1 at Mordialloc Station. Frankston Line services will run to an altered timetable until mid-2026 to minimise disruption to passengers while construction continues on the elevated rail bridges and new station.

Mordialloc will be boom gate free and the new elevated Mordialloc Station will open in 2026, featuring modern facilities, improved accessibility including entrances at both ends of the platforms, improved lighting, public spaces and landscaping with 86,000 trees, shrubs and grasses.

This project will save locals time currently more than 26,000 vehicles travelling through these three level crossings every day with boom gates down more than 40 minutes in the morning peak. It will also keep pedestrians and drivers safer with 12 near misses and one fatality at these crossings since 2016.
