Australia's world-class international education sector will continue to thrive as India has recognised more Australian qualifications.
The Association of Indian Universities will issue equivalence certificates for Australian tertiary degrees that include units from sub-bachelor qualifications, known as 'pathway degrees'.
Minister for Education Dan Tehan said India's decision to recognise Australian degrees validates Australia's global reputation as a leader in higher education.
"Australia has a vibrant and high-performing international education sector, and the British-based Centre for Global Higher Education predicts Australia will leapfrog the UK to become the world's second most popular destination for international students this year," Mr Tehan said.
"India's recognition acknowledges the quality of Australia's higher education providers, supported by more than $17 billion in funding from the Morrison Government this year alone.
"This decision will immediately benefit many Indian students who have studied in Australia, and further support Indian students to seek tertiary education opportunities in Australia.
"The recognition strengthens the education relationship between the two countries and is testament to India and Australia's ongoing commitment to collaboration."
Australia's world-class international education sector contributed more than $35 billion to the national economy last year.
In 2018, nine out of ten international tertiary students reported they were satisfied with their overall study experience in Australia.
Indian students made up more than 18 per cent of international students who chose to study in Australia's higher education sector last year, equating to the second largest proportion of international students.
