Department of Home Affairs

Joint media release with the Hon Catherine King MP, acting Minister for Emergency Management and the Hon Bill Shorten MP

Federal Government disaster assistance is now available in another two Victorian local government areas (LGA) affected by the October floods.

The flood impacted areas are Southern Grampians and Swan Hill.

The Australian Government Disaster Recovery Payment (AGDRP) has been extended to the additional Victorian LGAs making the one-off, non-means tested support available to a total of 31 Victorian LGAs.

The payment of $1000 per eligible adult and $400 per eligible child is available to people who have suffered a significant loss as a result of the floods, including a severely damaged or destroyed home or a serious injury. Equivalent financial assistance is available to eligible New Zealand citizens ('non-protected' Special Category Visas, subclass 444 holders).

Claims for both payments can be made online through myGov, 24 hours a day. For information on eligibility and how to apply visit the Services Australia website at Natural disaster events

People impacted by the floods can also pause or change their Centrelink debt repayments using the Money you owe service online in either their Centrelink online account, or Express Plus Centrelink mobile app. Alternatively, they can call 1800 076 072.

Quotes attributable to Acting Minister for Emergency Management, the Hon Catherine King:

The Victorian October Floods have taken a devastating toll on communities and we're with communities for the long haul.

Living in regional Victoria, I have seen the impact of the floods both on communities and the infrastructure they need to live and work.

We will continue to work alongside the Victorian Government to ensure appropriate support is available.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Government Services, the Hon Bill Shorten:

As a Victorian, it has been hard to watch the devastation caused by these floods so close to home - but seeing communities come together to help each other has given me a chance to reflect on our resilience.

I want people to know there is government support available. This help isn't just financial; Services Australia staff provide tailored assistance, including access to social workers.

If you need help claiming, you can call the Australian Government Emergency Information Line on 180 22 66, Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm.
