More fast tracked land to build affordable homes

Roger Jaensch,Minister for Planning

Minister for Housing

Today the Hodgman Liberal Government tabled another Housing Land Supply Order in the Tasmanian Parliament.

We need to pull all the levers we can to address the current housing shortage, and this process will see surplus government land rezoned faster to meet the increased demand for social and affordable homes across Tasmania.

The latest Order comprises 2.4 ha in the Launceston suburb of Newnham. This site has the potential to yield up to 75 dwelling units, depending on the type of development proposed.

This was a key action identified from the Housing Summit held last year, and the first set of Orders, under our new legislation, included sites in Devonport, West Moonah and Rokeby, expected to yield well over 50 subdivided lots with potential for multiple dwellings on these lots.

The rezone for Rokeby and Moonah is complete, and Devonport is in its final stages.

All land rezoned through our new process will be used for a mix of social, affordable and private housing options, and more Orders will be rolled out over the rest of the year.

This work is in addition to our other initiatives to encourage supply around the State, including our $68 million investment in the 2019-20 Budget to boost the number of new social and affordable homes.
