The Albanese Government is delivering critical road upgrades for communities in Queensland under the Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program (SLRIP).
More than $14.8 million will help fund five new projects, which will mean safer and more resilient roads for regional communities across the state.
Townsville City Council will receive over $8 million towards two projects:
- Lansdown Eco-Industrial Precinct - Stage 2 Internal Road Network
- Construction of Gulliver Street to Hugh Street Active Transport Facilities - Shared path/bicycle lanes.
Over $3.1 million has been allocated to Mareeba Shire Council for the Fassio Road upgrade to raise the standard of the transport corridor, enhancing safety and supporting agricultural productivity.
Lockyer Valley Regional Council will receive over $2.8 million for the Gatton Industrial Precinct - Market Drive, Freeman Road and Brooking Drive project.
Finally, Rockhampton Regional Council has been allocated over $796,000 towards the Glenmore Road pathway between Main Street and Welch Street, which will deliver an accessible and convenient link to several schools, employment areas and Alexandra Railway Bridge pedestrian walkway.
This is part of a more than $86.2 million nationwide commitment under the latest tranche of the program.
Of this, more than $77.6 million is earmarked for projects in regional Australia.
The SLRIP was created by the Albanese Labor Government to ease the administrative burden on local councils as well as state and territory governments.
Minister for Regional Development, Local Government and Territories Kristy McBain said the funding would help make roads safer.
"Whether it's local roads or major freight and passenger routes like the Bruce Highway, the Albanese Government is investing in the roads regional Queenslanders need and deserve.
"We understand that regional councils often need extra financial support to help with meeting increasing costs and continual pressure on transport infrastructure due to climate change and extreme weather.
"That's why the Albanese Government is delivering the funding local governments need to ensure our roads are safer."
With more than $200 million available each year, the program is part of the Australian Government's commitment to strengthen investment and support the delivery of safer and more productive roads across Australia.
