At its most recent Council meeting, Council endorsed recommendations of the Tourism and Major Events Advisory Committee to fund three new events through the annual Major Events Attraction Budget.
The events to be funded include:
- 2026 Motorcycling Australia ProMX
- 2027 Football Victoria Country Championships
- 2027-2031 AGL Loy Yang Traralgon Junior International Tennis Championships
The projected economic impact for the three events combined is more than $6.5 million, with a Return on Investment (ROI) per dollar spend of $65:1.
The 2026 Motorcycling Australia ProMX is a major national and international event attracting around 320 riders and 3,000 spectators. The ProMX will have an expected economic impact of $1.8 million.
The 2027 Football Victoria Country Championship is a three-day event that will be one of the first major events to use the newly upgraded Gippsland Sports and Entertainment Precinct. The event is expected to attract 1,350 competitors and over 3,000 spectators. The event will have an expected ROI of $60:1.
The 2027 -2031 AGL Loy Yang Traralgon Junior International Tennis Championship tournament has a long association with Council for over 33 years. The tournament runs for 14 days and is for elite under 18-year-old players from over 35 countries around the world. The event will likely generate nearly $3 million dollars in economic activity.
Latrobe City Council Mayor, Councillor Sharon Gibson, said that pending agreements for these major events, Council is delighted to be welcoming back a range of events for the community to enjoy in particular the Junior International Tennis Championship tournament.
"Council has been meeting with Tennis Australia, Tennis Victoria and the Traralgon Tennis Club on a regular basis over the past six months to secure the AGL Loy Yang Traralgon Junior International Tennis Championships not just for a year, but we have locked in a five-year agreement. I am delighted with this news," said the Mayor.
"Latrobe City has a growing reputation as a premier regional destination for hosting major events that are incredibly successful and popular with our community, so watch this space as to what other major events will be coming to Latrobe City.
