More Prizes Up For Grabs In Tagged Trout Promotion

Tasmanian Government

Tasmania's freshwater anglers will have even more reason to cast a line this trout season, with more tagged trout to be released into Yingina / Great Lake.

Minister for Primary Industries and Water, Gavin Pearce, said it was in readiness for the official opening of the rainbow trout season today.

"Tasmania is renowned for its trout fishery and this promotion adds an extra level of excitement for anglers heading out to wet a line this season," Minister Pearce said.

"Delivering more of these opportunities is a key part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future.

"Two tagged rainbow trout will be released into Yingina / Great Lake taking the total number of tagged trout available in this water to six.

"Our Government is not only upping the odds of catching a tagged fish, but it has also upped the cash prize for the first tagged rainbow and first tagged brown trout caught from the lake to $25,000.

"The promotion has proven popular with anglers and these additional trout provide even more incentive to get out on the water, explore our inland fisheries and enjoy everything Tasmania has to offer.

"Five prize-tagged trout, each worth $5,000, have already been landed this season, highlighting the continued success of the promotion."

These additional fish are being released as part of the Tasmanian Tagged Trout Promotion 2024-27, which already offers anglers the chance to land multiple cash prizes of $5,000 and a now two major prizes of $25,000.

The Tagged Trout Promotion is designed to encourage participation in recreational freshwater angling while showcasing Tasmania's outstanding inland fisheries, all while supporting regional communities.

To be eligible for a prize, anglers must hold a current freshwater angling licence or be under 14 years of age and have permission from a parent or guardian.

Tagged trout must be reported to the Inland Fisheries Service with photo evidence within 72 hours of capture and in accordance with the promotion's terms and conditions.
