The Hodgman majority Liberal Government is continuing to support disadvantaged learner drivers across the State by extending funding for the Learner Driver Mentor Program (LDMP) by $1 million each year.
This commitment is part of the recently launched $75 million Towards Zero Action Plan 2020-2024, which includes $50 million for road safety improvements targeting Tasmania's highest risk areas and aims to achieve the greatest possible reductions in serious injuries and deaths.
A campaign launched today encourages new learner driver mentors to get involved in the program, highlighting the great things that come from helping disadvantaged learner drivers in our community.
I'd like to take the opportunity to thank the current volunteers of the Learner Driver Mentor Programs (LDMP) for their contribution to helping learner drivers to gain the essential hours of driving experience they need to obtain a license and get on the road.
There are currently 16 LDMPs across Tasmania supported by 180 mentors. Last financial year mentors provided over 20,000 supervised hours and 197 learners achieved their P1 through the program.
I encourage anybody who can spare one to two hours a week to considering mentoring to help somebody obtain their driver licence in the new year.
