'More than New Year's Eve Celebration': Countdown is on until NYE: Light Up Sky

The countdown is on for Liverpool City Council's returning New Year's Eve celebrations with NYE: Light Up the Sky coming to six locations across the Liverpool Local Government Area from 9pm on Friday 31 December.

Mayor of Liverpool Ned Mannoun said while many Liverpool residents will delight in the displays from their backyards and driveways, some special members of our community will also be able to revel in the festivities from afar.

"Council was delighted to hear that last year's fireworks reached all the way into the wards of Liverpool Hospital and various local nursing homes, bringing a beacon of hope to those who have been among the most impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

"For us this is more than a New Year's Eve Celebration – it is a 'Thank You' to our community for its resilience and solidarity in the face of hardship and a representation of our gratitude for the tireless frontline health staff who made unimaginable sacrifices to protect our community," Mayor Mannoun said.

"We are delighted to bring back this much-loved event at the family friendly time of 9pm so that residents of all ages can enjoy our spectacular NYE fireworks.

"With six strategic locations around our city, Council has ensured that no one in Liverpool is too far from being able to enjoy the show.

"Light Up the Sky will be the perfect introduction to 2022 and I certainly hope it will be a more positive year for our community and that we can celebrate together again in person."

Liverpool City Council also announced Sydney's Hit Network 2DayFM is supporting this year's celebrations as the Exclusive Media Partner.

"We are very grateful for 2DayFM's support who have recognised how important our upcoming major events are on the journey to recovery and healing for our community," Mayor Mannoun said.

For those with a penchant for photography, Council will also be returning its NYE: Light Up the Sky Photography Competition with 1 x 10 $100 EFTPOS gift vouchers up for grabs. To enter the competition, simply post of a photo of someone you know enjoying Council's fireworks display to your Facebook or Instagram profile using the hashtag #NYELightUpTheSky.

Council advised the simultaneous fireworks displays are created to be enjoyed from home. However, should residents wish to move to another area for a clearer line-of-sight, they must choose the site carefully and adhere to the current Public Health Order.
