In a fitting nod to the end of Plastic Free July, Mornington Peninsula Shire Council this week committed to reduce single use plastics on the Peninsula and set a goal to eliminate use completely in Council-controlled environments.
Shire Mayor Councillor David Gill said the commitment to eliminate single use plastics would be backed up by policy, expected to impact Council events; any use of Council land and facilities and Shire business such as tenders, leases and contracts.
"As a Council we're acting on the concerns of our community by raising this important environmental issue.
"A new policy will bring environmental awareness and accountability across Shire business and public activity.
"The Shire must show that its own reliance on plastics is being tackled and lead the way in using alternatives that help our community learn about waste reduction best practice", concluded Cr Gill.
Briars Ward Councillor Bev Colomb who raised a notice of motion at the 23 July Council meeting, said the community had expressed overwhelming support for a ban.
"Our community have been strong advocates for the elimination of single use plastics across the Peninsula and Council is supporting this with real action.
"This is not an issue we can wait on, we must act now to protect our precious environment".
The Shire has already begun work with a new Events Policy adopted in June encouraging all organisers to ensure events are conducted sustainably with no detrimental impact to the environment or amenity of an area or location.
From 1 November 2019, the state government will introduce a ban on lightweight plastic shopping bags.
The ban will apply to all suppliers of bags and retailers including supermarkets, green grocers, bakeries, pharmacies, clothing stores, restaurants, cafes, markets, takeaway food outlets, and many more. Learn more at: vicbagban.com.au
