Morwell CBD Double-Storey Car Park Prep Begins

Preparation works are underway for construction of the new Morwell Central Business District (CBD) Double-Storey Car Park, expected to start in late October 2026, subject to authority approvals.

The project will replace the existing car park at 141 Commercial Road with an attractive, light-filled double-storey facility, delivering more than 120 additional free public parking spaces in the Morwell CBD.

This project is the last remaining site being delivered by Latrobe City Council on behalf of the Victorian Government through the Regional Car Parks Fund (RCPF) which is set to deliver 900 new spaces across Moe, Morwell and Traralgon. Approximately 800 spaces have already been delivered to date in Morwell, Moe and Traralgon.

Latrobe City Council Mayor, Councillor Sharon Gibson, said the project was an important investment that would deliver long-term benefits for residents, visitors and businesses alike.

"Getting a park in Commercial Road can be downright challenging during the week," Cr Gibson said. "The new double-storey car park will provide welcome additional capacity for people coming into central Morwell to shop, do business, visit the Latrobe Regional Gallery or Council headquarters."

"We are most grateful to the Victorian Government for funding this project which is being delivered by Council.

"The car parks already delivered through the RCPF program have been welcomed by the community and we look forward to the new Commercial Road Car Park providing similar benefits."

The new car park will improve access to key community destinations, including the Morwell Magistrates Court, Morwell Rose Garden, Latrobe Regional Gallery, nearby businesses and services, while helping reduce parking pressure on surrounding streets.

Works are expected to be completed by mid-June 2027.

During construction, the existing Commercial Road Car Park will be unavailable. Temporary parking, pedestrian and traffic management arrangements will be put in place to ensure community safety, and continued access to the town centre and surrounding facilities.

Council is working closely with key stakeholders, including the Morwell Magistrates Court, Victoria Police and neighbouring businesses, to minimise disruption and ensure they receive timely information about access arrangements and construction impacts.

Residents, business operators and visitors are encouraged to plan ahead, follow temporary signage and make use of alternative parking locations while construction is underway.

Regular project updates will be provided throughout the construction period, including information about parking changes, access arrangements and timelines.

Construction of the Morwell Double-Storey Car Park follows the successful delivery of six other RCPF projects across Latrobe City.
