Oliver has been number one for boys every year since 2014, while Charlotte has topped the list for girls in 2012, 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2018.

Newcomers to the top 10 include Liam (eighth) and Leo (ninth) for boys and Harper (ninth) and Emily (10th) for girls.

Royal inspired names continue to be popular with William the second most popular boys' name and Harry jumping from 22 to 15. George, Edward, Louis and Charles also feature on the list. Aside from Charlotte, popular royal names for girls include Mia, Isla, Sophie, Zara, Elizabeth and Savannah.

Attorney General Mark Speakman said when it comes to baby names many parents are playing it safe and sticking with centuries-old favourites.

"Huge crowds greeted Prince Harry and Meghan Markle when they visited NSW in October last year, so it's no surprise royal names are in fashion," Mr Speakman said.

"The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are about to welcome their first child and no doubt many NSW parents will be looking to them for inspiration."

Parents have 60 days to register their newborn. Registration is free in NSW and helps establish a child's legal identity.

All birth registrations can be completed online at the Births Deaths & Marriages website
