Moving Toward Circular Economy: Recovering Old Tyres And Conveyor Belts

Dept of Climate Change, Energy, Environment & Water

A circular economy means reusing, fixing and recycling things instead of throwing them away. Australia needs to shift to a circular economy for a sustainable future.

Old tyres are one of the largest types of hazardous waste in Australia. Conveyor belts, made from similar rubber materials, also pose a risk. If not properly managed, both can end up in landfill or pollute land and water.

Case study

Researchers from the Sustainable Communities and Waste Hub explored the best ways to recycle tyres and conveyor belts. They looked at what works in Australia and other countries.

The report includes a series of recommendations, including:

  • creating a regulated stewardship scheme to support this change
  • banning landfilling and on-site disposal
  • building stronger markets for recycled materials
  • using circular economy principles
  • engaging with Indigenous communities.

The recommendations are now being considered to improve waste regulations. They will help Australia move closer to a cleaner, more sustainable future.
