A new wind farm in the state's south-west will soon be harnessing Victoria's world-class wind resources to deliver cheaper, renewable power for almost 250,000 homes thanks to the Allan Labor Government.
Minister for Planning Sonya Kilkenny today announced the approval of the 400-megawatt Mt Fyans Wind Farm near Mortlake - the third largest wind farm to be approved by the Allan Labor Government in 10 years.
The wind farm will be made up of 81 turbines and set to create more than 100 jobs during construction, as well as 10 fulltime local jobs once the wind farm becomes operational.
Wind is the biggest contributor to renewable electricity generation in Victoria, with 21 percent of our state's monthly electricity generation coming from wind farms in the first half of 2025.
Because of this investment in renewables, Victorians continue to benefit from some of the lowest energy prices in the country. Over the financial year Victoria's wholesale price was $106 per megawatt - compared to $149 in New South Wales, $144 in Tasmania, $136 in South Australia and $125 in Queensland.
This project referred to a Planning Panel for consideration and included wide-ranging consultation with residents, community groups and government agencies. The panel recommended the project could proceed, with measures taken to protect local biodiversity, including bats and brolgas.
The project is located in the South-West Renewable Energy Zone, one of six areas identified as most suitable to host new renewable energy generation across Victoria through the Victorian Transmission Plan.
Victoria has met every renewable energy target it has set to date and is well on the way to meeting the next ones of 65 per cent renewable energy generation by 2030 and 95 per cent by 2035.
Delivering more renewable energy will provide a secure source of cheap renewable energy for homes, businesses and industry across the whole state and boost employment - 67,000 jobs will be required to deliver our energy transition by 2040 - a 60 percent increase from today.
As stated by Minister for Planning Sonya Kilkenny
"We're making good decisions faster that will still protect the local environment, while providing Victorian households with cheaper energy."
As stated by Minister for Energy and Resources Lily D'Ambrosio
"The Mt Fyans Wind Farm will not only provide cheaper and reliable energy for hundreds of thousands of Victorians - it'll also provide a major boost to the economy of South-West Victoria."
As stated by Member for South West Victoria Jacinta Ermacora
"Renewable energy is the cheapest form of new build energy available - it helps bring down power prices and creates great new jobs for locals."
