A multi-million-dollar remediation project to refurbish 68 houses and replace 222 roofs in the Jabiru township is underway as part of a $25.8 million Morrison Government commitment to helping transition the town towards its new future.
Minister for the Environment Sussan Ley said that following the hand back of the former mining town to the Mirarr Traditional Owners, the Government remained committed to contributing to its future as a tourism hub for the World Heritage listed Kakadu National Park.
"These Jabiru housing upgrades are part of an historic $276 million Morrison Government investment Kakadu and Jabiru," Minister Ley said.
"Remediation measures are already underway to support the long-term future of the town and include beautification projects such as improvements to the town plaza and bus shelters, upgrades to the lake park and pool, construction of a new carpark, and commissioning of public artwork from local artists," Minister Ley said.
Early works to replace roofs and refurbish houses will continue until mid-December, ahead of the wet season, before work recommences to finalise roof replacement after the wet season.
On 26 June 2021, Jabiru was handed back to the Mirarr Traditional Owners.
The handover of Jabiru by Minister Ley and the Minister for Indigenous Australians Ken Wyatt on June 26 marked the culmination of years of consultation between the Australian Government, Mirarr people, the Director of National Parks and key stakeholders including the Northern Land Council and Northern Territory Government.
Remediation of Jabiru township complements other major tourism infrastructure upgrades underway in Kakadu National Park such as the recent reopening of Jim Jim Creek crossing and the redesign of the Cahills Crossing viewing platform.
