Murder charge laid after man extradited from QLD over fatal assault at Coonabarabran

A man will appear in court today charged with murder after being extradited from Queensland as part of investigations into the death of a man at Coonabarabran earlier this year.

Emergency services were called to a home on Nandi Street about 7pm on Wednesday 12 May 2021, following reports a man had been found injured.

Police were told a group of people had gathered at the home when the 53-year-old man was found at the front of the house with serious injuries to his head and face.

The injured man was taken to Coonabarabran Hospital and subsequently airlifted to St George Hospital where he later died.

Police established a crime scene and detectives from Orana Mid-Western Police District, assisted by the State Crime Command Homicide Squad, commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the man's death.

Following extensive inquiries, detectives applied for and were granted an arrest warrant for a 23-year-old man, who is known to the older man.

About 6.30am on Monday (12 July 2021), officers from the Queensland Police Service arrested the man at a home in Carseldine, Queensland.

He appeared at Brisbane Magistrates Court yesterday (Tuesday 13 July 2021), where his extradition to NSW was applied for and granted.

The man was escorted by Orana Mid-Western detectives to Tweed Heads Police Station and charged with murder.

He has been refused bail to appear at Tweed Heads Local Court today (Wednesday 14 July 2021).
