Murray River Council has held the first meeting of its Access and Inclusion Advisory Committee, marking a significant step toward improving accessibility and inclusion within the community.
The committee includes representatives from the local community, Council, and disability service providers Community Living & Respite Services and Vivid.
Together, they will provide ongoing advice and recommendations to help ensure the rights and needs of people with disabilities are integrated into Council's planning, projects and services.
Mayor, Cr John Harvie welcomed the formation of the committee, emphasising its importance in shaping a more inclusive region.
"This committee will help Council identify key priorities and challenges faced by people with disabilities and ensure that accessibility and inclusion remain at the forefront of our decision-making."
Cr Harvie said a key focus of the committee is to support the progression of actions outlined in Council's Disability Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP).
"The DIAP offers a series of recommendations to help council identify and address barriers for people with disabilities."
"It covers areas such as accessible infrastructure, employment opportunities, and community engagement, so it's great to have the committee up and running to help us with its implementation."
The committee's first meeting focused on setting its agenda for the year ahead, including key issues such as improving access to infrastructure, grant funding, workplace adjustments, and strengthening community engagement strategies.
The committee will meet on a bi-monthly basis.
