Victoria’s music industry has received another major boost, with the Andrews Labor Government delivering more than $500,000 for local artists, events and music businesses through the latest round of Music Works Grants .
Minister for Creative Industries Martin Foley today announced the funding at the unveiling of a statue of music industry legend Ian ‘Molly’ Meldrum and a new music mural in Richmond.
From funding international touring or new works, to soundproofing venues and supporting live gigs – the Music Works package has been crucial in building Victoria’s global music reputation.
This latest Music Works grants back a diverse range of music professionals, organisations, businesses and events – from artists such as Alice Ivy, Dave Arden and Sui Zhen to music business Melbourne Electric Sound Studio (MESS) and industry development initiatives like all-ages songwriter program, Push Songs.
The twenty-five projects will further strengthen the music industry through support for career and professional development opportunities, local and international touring, music production, cultural exchange and mentorship.
The life-size bronze statue of Molly, by Melbourne sculptor Louis Laumen, stands close by the new Wall of Music mural in Richmond’s Wangaratta Street Park, which is one of the hundreds of previous Music Works recipients.
The Wall of Music mural is a tribute to music fans and neighbouring legendary live music venue the Corner Hotel. It was created by Melbourne stencil artist 23rd Key and funded through Music Works’ Rockin’ the Laneways program.
Rockin’ the Laneways supports projects that celebrate Victoria’s rich music heritage and give profile to places as sites of significance for music-loving locals and visitors. Past projects include a sculpture of Bon Scott in AC/DC Lane and the Chrissy Amphlett Melbourne Podcast Tour.
Both Rockin’ the Laneways and Music Works grants are part of the Labor Government’s landmark $22 million Music Works package, which is strengthening Victoria’s music industry and culture from the ground up.
