Muslim Charity Donates $1M to Combat Trafficking

IOM

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) and Muslim Charity signed a new Memorandum of Understanding today, committing USD 1 million to support global efforts to end human trafficking and modern slavery. This collaboration marks the first formal partnership under IOM's Islamic Philanthropy Fund since its launch earlier this year.

"This partnership reflects a shared commitment to human dignity and justice," said IOM Chief of Staff Mohammed Abdiker. "By aligning faith-inspired giving with global efforts to end exploitation, we are not only responding to urgent needs but also building pathways toward lasting change. The Islamic Philanthropy Fund is a powerful example of how solidarity can be translated into concrete action for those living in the shadows of conflict, poverty, and displacement."

An estimated 50 million people globally are living in conditions of modern slavery, including survivors of human trafficking. Children make up nearly one-third of those trafficked, while the majority are exploited through forced labour and sexual exploitation. As global displacement continues to rise due to conflict, climate crisis, and economic instability, the risk of exploitation for vulnerable people grows increasingly severe.

"More than 1,400 years ago, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) championed the abolition of slavery and the preservation of human dignity," said Irfan Rajput, Director of Programmes and Policy at Muslim Charity. "Inspired by these timeless values, Muslim Charity is committed to addressing the root causes and consequences of modern slavery and trafficking. Through this partnership with IOM, we aim to mobilise the compassion and generosity of the Muslim community to help free those trapped in exploitation and restore their rights, dignity, and opportunities."

Through this new partnership, Muslim Charity joins IOM and the Global Donors Forum (GDF) to support efforts that prevent trafficking, protect survivors, and promote lasting solutions for affected individuals and communities. The contribution also reinforces the joint initiative with GDF and will help strengthen IOM's work in Afghanistan, where support is directed toward building community resilience and improving access to essential services for displaced and returnee populations.

The agreement brings together IOM's global expertise in humanitarian assistance and protection with Muslim Charity's impactful work in delivering emergency aid and sustainable development solutions. The collaboration is rooted in Islamic principles, notably Zakat, Sadaqah, and the concept of Riqab, which underscores the obligation to support those subjected to exploitation and abuse.

Established in 2025, IOM's Islamic Philanthropy Fund aims to harness the power of faith-based giving to support people affected by displacement, trafficking, and other forms of vulnerability. The Fund operates under a 100 per cent Zakat distribution policy to ensure that every contribution directly benefits those in need, in line with Islamic values of trust and accountability.

The collaboration with Muslim Charity marks a significant step forward in leveraging Islamic social finance to protect vulnerable populations and uphold their rights. As the Islamic Philanthropy Fund grows, IOM will continue to build strategic partnerships with charitable institutions, faith-based organizations, and individual donors to expand its impact.
