The North Australian Indigenous Land and Sea Management Alliance Ltd (NAILSMA) have been engaged to deliver Phase One of the Traditional Owner-Led Water Quality Improvement Program.
As part of Phase One, NAILSMA will establish a:
- Traditional Owner-Led Reef Water Quality Advisory Group to inform the design of Phase Two of the Program
- Traditional Owner-Led Reef Water Quality Working Group for program support, capacity building initiatives and to support greater participation in water quality improvement.
Phase Two will provide grants for on-ground projects that:
- improve Reef water quality
- strengthen Traditional Owner-led stewardship of Country
- deliver environmental, cultural and community benefits.
These efforts will help protect the Great Barrier Reef and Catchments. They support stronger Indigenous leadership in caring for the environment.
The $30 million Traditional Owner-Led Water Quality Improvement Program was announced last year. The program will be delivered with Traditional Owners. It will leverage traditional knowledge and the success of the Reef Trust Partnership to improve Reef water quality.
It is one of many significant steps that Australia is taking to increase efforts to improve water quality.
