Vancouver, British Columbia - We take the duty to consult with Indigenous groups very seriously and the Government of Canada is engaging in meaningful consultation with Indigenous communities and stakeholders to form our policy decisions.
The Government of Canada understands that a strong, science-based approach to regulating the aquaculture industry is essential and that is why we have and will continue to conduct extensive research which informs our policies and regulations.
We support a sustainable and responsible management of our stocks, informed by sound science which is why we announced in December, a set of initiatives to ensure our aquaculture sector is economically successful and environmentally sustainable.
This includes an assessment of on-land and sea-based closed containment technology, and the development of a framework for risk management.
The Government of Canada has also announced a Wild Salmon Policy Implementation Plan and we are working with BC to help restore and protect wild Pacific Salmon.
Fisheries and Oceans Canada is currently reviewing the Federal Court decision.
