National Child Protection Week, which officially began on Sunday 1September, will this year focus on the theme Children thrive when parents are supported.

National Child Protection Week, which runs through to Saturday 7September, is a week dedicated to focusing on and putting children at thecentre by supporting parents and families to raise happy, thriving children.

Chief Executive of Territory Families Ken Davies said that this weekgives us all a chance to think about how we can help to better protect andsupport children in the Northern Territory.

National Child Protection Week is a reminder that one of the most basicpremises of our society is that children and young people have the right to besafe and protected from abuse and exploitation, he said.

The theme of the week aligns with Territory Families guiding principlesfor children, which are:

  • Childrenand young people are entitled to live in a caring and nurturing environment,protected from harm and exploitation

  • Theircontributions to the community should be recognised for their value and merit

  • Theirviews on all matters affecting them should be given serious consideration and takeninto account and parents, families and communities have the primary role insafeguarding and promoting the wellbeing of their children and young people andshould be supported in carrying out this role.

NAPCAN,with the support of the Territory Families will be hosting the annual Darwinand Alice Springs events which include a morning tea, networking opportunitiesand a number of presentation.
