The Morrison Government has released a new National Climate Resilience and Adaptation Strategy (NCRAS) ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP 26) in Glasgow.
The strategy delivers a national framework for greater collaboration with the private sector in identifying projects that will meet the needs of the future, improved climate information services, and practical initiatives to protect Australia's environment and its economy in the face of changing climates.
Minister for the Environment Sussan Ley said the National Adaptation Policy Office (NAPO) in the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment will coordinate adaptation advice across industry and governments, from the way we build houses and plant trees in urban environments, to commercial building design and environment restoration programs.
"This is about making the right investments for our future," Minister Ley said.
"Successful adaptation will help ensure that buildings, infrastructure, ecosystems, our communities and our economy are resilient to the impacts of climate change.
"The Strategy guides how we will adapt to our uniquely Australian climate, in an Australian way and will integrate the latest climate information, environmental science and adaptation strategies into everyday decision-making.
"The Strategy outlines our approach to monitor and improve adaptation actions and is another example of the Morrison Government's responsible and practical action on climate change.
"Working with business, governments and the community, I am confident that we can guide greater collective investment in adaptation to reduce the impacts of major weather events."
NCRAS will be presented to COP26 alongside Australia's first international Adaptation Communication.
The Adaptation Communication showcases Australia's strong and practical adaptation action and shares our expertise in support of a stronger, more prosperous Indo-Pacific region.
